Through the past decade, The Iranian Cheetah Society has mostly monitored protected areas with evidence of cheetah presence. ICS monitoring results have shown a decrease of population in all studied areas. Some areas show zero new births and in others, the mortality rate is higher than the birth rate. According to recent studies cheetah population is estimated to be less than 40 individuals.
These concerning estimations have encouraged the ICS to look for cheetahs in free and less studied areas, rather than protected areas where had left us in despair.

The “Explorers of Hope” team is an effort towards finding new cheetahs in areas that weren’t surveyed before.
The ICS is attempting to observe and report all evidence about cheetah presence in Iran with help of national contribution and public participation and is hoping to be able to identify more cheetah individuals in the country.
The Explorers of Hope group started work in spring 2020, and publicly releases functional and financial reports every once in a while. You too can join the journey in search of Asiatic Cheetahs.
